The Atlas synthetic track surface requires very little maintenance. The following are tips on the few maintenance procedures that are recommended.
The track should always be kept clean. Cleaning should be accomplished by vacuuming, pressure washing with water or blowing off the track with a wheel-type blower. Sweepers are not recommended. The main enemies of the Atlas surface are dirt, sand and debris. All of these should be avoided whenever possible. Many times the turf on the interior of the track builds up to a proportion where it holds water on the track. Check your landscaping from time to time to be certain that surface water is able to drain from the Atlas surface into the infield.
Roots and grass can break apart the base asphalt and loosen the Atlas surface. Therefore, it is imperative that vegetation be controlled. Soil sterilant should be applied every year to prevent encroachment of vegetation into the base asphalt or track surface. This is especially important along the edges of the runways and high jump. Do not use gasoline, diesel or diesel-based soil sterilants as they damage the base asphalt. Roundup and most other herbicides will not harm the Atlas surface.
Keep heavy equipment, motorcycles, horses, bicycles, and traffic off the track. When it is necessary for the football team to cross or stand on the runway, Atlas Redi-Mats should be laid down where this traffic occurs. Ten Atlas Redi-Mats provide a protected crossing area 30' x 8' for field vehicles and cleated athletes. These or similar rubber mats are recommended.
It is advisable to keep joggers off the inside lanes. Clearly 90% of the wear on most tracks is on lanes #1 and #2. "No Jogging" signs, which list distances in outside lanes are available from Atlas Tracks. If the inside lanes become worn on your Atlas track they can be resurfaced without re-doing the entire track at a relatively low cost.

Maintenance of ATLAS Athletic Surfaces
In order to ensure that your facility and your athletes receive maximum value from your sports floor it is necessary to abide by the product’s maintenance guidelines and to establish a proper maintenance regimen. While free-standing water and poor atmospheric conditions within the facility pose as threats to any sports surface, overall maintenance requirements for indoor sports flooring tend to vary depending on the type of surface installed. Hardwood sports courts, as a hygroscopic living surface, calls for the most demanding and costly maintenance practices. In addition to a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly maintenance routine, hardwood sports floors must be sanded and refinished every 4-5 years depending on use. Synthetic sports flooring generally does not require any recoats or waxing and can be very easily maintained by sweeping, washing and rinsing the floor on a regular basis. Most synthetic sports surfaces are highly resistant to staining and permit the use of an auto-scrubber for surface-level revitalization. Regardless of the sports floor, installing an entrance mat can help to cut down on soiling related issues by as much as 90%.
